![]() I’m sure people complained about how hard the Silver Coin challenges were in the original, but the solution wasn’t to replace them with something even more difficult. Moreover, in order to unlock the Silver Coin challenges for the new levels, you need to get gold, which requires you to hit EVERY SINGLE BALLOON in one perfect run. It’s the closest a game has ever come to giving me motion sickness, and I used to play 3DS games with the 3D all the way up. Sounds fine, right? Well, a lot of the balloons are placed in extremely difficult locations that are only visible for a short time, and many of them require you to turn completely backwards to pop them. Getting at least bronze on these is required in order to fight the boss a second time, as well as unlock that course’s Silver Coin challenge in the menu. Also, the Silver Coin challenges have been made an optional challenge, instead replaced with these shooting gallery segments where you have to tap on balloons to pop them. And there is no way to turn this off, you just have to get used to either quickly pulling out your stylus or rubbing your greasy finger on the screen. You see, at the beginning of races you can only get a boost by drawing on the touch screen or blowing into the microphone. ![]() If you’re going to offer customization on something, you have to offer something more robust than just drawing file icons and billboards.īut that’s not even the worst of the touch-screen garbage. I tried to recreate Super Mario Kart’s Rainbow Road using this mode, and it wasn’t anywhere close to right. ![]() You can’t even decide on the type of background, it’s always just some floating platform in the clouds. The game just randomly does all that for you, all you need to do is draw the basic shape and decide where the finish line is. You cannot control the height and depth of your levels, nor where the balloons go. Now, a course creator sounds like a really cool idea on paper, but like so many things the DS version screws it up. These aren’t really in the DS version outside of Multiplayer, instead replaced by TT requiring you to draw a shape on the touch screen, which creates a course that you can race him on. In the original version’s Adventure mode a few of the levels had special keys that unlocked new challenges, which were this game’s equivalent to the Mario Kart series’ Battle mode. And that’s not even the worst of it, because if you buy the ’Air B’ special bodywork for all your vehicles, you’re basically unstoppable and can beat any opponent even on their luckiest day.Īnd the changes don’t end there, my friends. (or, in the Walrus’ case, bullshit speed-boosts in the tunnels.) And speaking of hazards, a lot of the courses themselves have been altered to be made easier, such as removing the lasers in Spaceport Alpha or reducing the dinosaur’s appearance in Ancient Lake. ![]() The TT ghosts (which you now have to beat for every vehicle in order to unlock him) range from ‘barely even trying’ to ‘so perfect you’ll tear your hair out trying to find any flaw to exploit.’ Even the bosses aren’t that difficult, as they move slower than before and don’t have as many hazards to avoid. There’ll be times when they perfectly hit you with a missile just as you’re about to cross the finish line and win, and other times when they just seem to be driving into a wall for no reason. In my original review I criticized this game for being too easy, but that’s not really the whole story, because the AI is very inconsistent in the DS version. ![]() Unfortunately that’s where my praise for this version ends, as these positives do not outweigh everything this game does wrong. ![]()
